How To Wear Sequins During the Day

Sequins are typically reserved for a night time affair; however, it is really easy to pull sequins off during the day and even at work. I wore this on a recent trip to Birmingham, which is three hours away from where I live. I wanted to wear something that would maintain it's shape and not become overly wrinkled on long car drive. My solution? Take a basic formula of jeans and a boyfriend cardigan and add a little visual interest with this sequin detailed top.

Floral Shorts

If you remember this post on the floral trend then you remember that I have been going back and forth on whether or not to get a pair of floral pants. Well I have not yet dove into that investment, but I did stumble across these shorts when I was at JC Penny's the other day and immediately fell in love. Shorts are something I am very picky about. I am not particularly fond of my legs so I usually don't show them a lot. Even if I wear a shorter skirt, I typically have tights or something on. These fit so well and are not super short so I don't feel uncomfortable wearing them. Here I decided to pair them with this orange popover and add neutral accessories so I am not too over the top. Baby steps right? Maybe I will eventually get the nerve up to get those pants!

Brainstorming - Stripped Skirt

I have been trying to be a smarter shopper these days and this involves not purchasing an item that I cannot pair with multiple items in my own closet. Typically if I am thinking about purchasing something (basic staples not included because I mean they go with everything right?) I will make a list of potential outfits using items in my own closet. If I can't come up with 5 - 10 different ways to wear it then I don't purchase it. I don't want a closet full of items that can only be worn with one thing. I mean what fun is that? Polyvore make it possible to do this same process, but adds visualization to it which makes it much easier to see what an outfit will look like together.

Rainy Day - Hello My New Hunter Boots

My Mom and Dad bought me these Hunter boots for my birthday, so it was actually perfect that it rained all morning yesterday (my actual birthday). The hubby and I decided to step out for an early casual dinner and a stroll downtown. I decided to put my Hunter boots to good use and take them for a test spin and as soon as we get downtown the clouds go away and the sunshine comes out. Great for an afternoon strolling around, but not so great of a fashion statement to wear rain boots in the sunny conditions. And wouldn't you know that as soon as we get home it starts pouring down again! Oh well, my rain boots may not have actually seen any rain action yet, but I still love them just the same.

Skin Care - Turning 29 Makes You Think

Well today is my birthday and the start of the last year in my twenties. I am officially 29. This birthday is making me realize that I should probably be taking better care of my skin. I mean don't they say prevention is much easier than treatment? I really don't like heavy creams or to have a bunch of stuff on my face because it makes me feel "heavy" and like I am suffocating. I also don't want to spend a ton of money on skin care products. So, after a little research and trial and error I have come up with a skin care routine that I am going to try. I am going to be patient and give it a few week's before making any adjustments. I am so not a patient person, which is probably why I get so frustrate with skin care products. They need time to work, but I want them to work now. :-)

How To Dress to Support Your Favorite Sports Team

The NFL Draft starts tomorrow which means my household will be glued to the TV to see who gets picked to play for our teams – Me the Broncos and Alex the Cowboys. Luckily our teams only face each other once every four years, which is a good thing because as much as I hate to admit it---- I don’t lose well. But the draft is usually a fun event for both of us. I really wanted to support my team, but unfortunately the work week doesn’t stop so I will have to do so in a business appropriate way. Don’t have to work? I have also put together an outfit based on my favorite team T-shirt.

Printed Pants At The Office

Ok - so I finally took the plunge into printed pants. Instead of going for the bold floral pair, I decided to go with a more subtle print and these fit the bill perfectly. In a classic color like navy, they can be paired with so many things and will be in constant rotation in my wardrobe. I am still thinking I may just need those floral ones as well! Have you taken the plunge yet? How do you wear your printed pants?

Balancing Act

This blog is about finding the balance in life and sometimes we fail, Lord knows I do. Take this week – Completely forgot about my son’s doctors appointment on Tuesday for his 18 month checkup. I had to call Wednesday morning to beg for forgiveness and a new appointment and they graciously fit us in that afternoon.

Today, I just wanted to share some things that are happening in my life and things I love. All during my pregnany I couldn't wear heels. Ok - look... I LOVE SHOES. And for about 7 months I could only wear one pair of shoes. My feet wouldn't fit into anything else. Guah it was a terrible time. But i am happy to say that I can now wear my heels again and nothing makes me happier than to open this room and decide on a pair.

Girls Night Out - Open for Link Ups!

Welcome to Girls Night Out!  So... I couldn't wait until tomorrow!! :-) The link up will be open for one week!

Today we are focusing on what to wear for a night out whether it is with your best buddies or your significant other. I am a huge crush on polka dots which is what originally drew me to this top. The top itself is constructed similar to a corset which brings a real “Hot Mama” vibe to it, but the ruffle adds a soft romantic side which makes this one versatile piece and perfect for a dinner date with the hubby. Simple black trousers in a fitted skinny cut lets the top be the star of the outfit. If it gets chilly out I can throw on this tweed blazer which adds texture to the outfit.

Pink and Floral Prints

Floral is usually a big trend each spring and this year is no exception. I don’t own a lot of floral items, but I have been eying a pair of floral pants at Target. The hubby, Peyton, and I went to Target the other day. They immediately headed to the toy section and I immediately headed to my “toy section” (aka clothing/shoes/accessories). I spotted the pants and immediately fell in love with the print; however, I was not sure if I was willing to jump into a pair of floral pants as my first printed pants purchase. I mean I have long legs and does anyone really want to see that many flowers on one person? I felt like I would send people into an allergy attack if I walked by them. I went to find the hubby to ask his advice and surprisingly he liked them and immediately started searching for my size which they did not have. On the way home I searched Target.com for a pair and found this skirt instead. It is pretty close to the pattern and I really do think I will get tons more wear out of the skirt. I was hoping it would come in so I would be able to style it for this months Third Thursday Threads link up, but unfortunately it has not arrived yet so you will be seeing this amazing top instead.

Navy, Mint and Leopard

Can a navy, mint, and leopard combination be office appropriate? Of course it can! I love taking two wildcards and grounding them with a key basic piece. I love my mint skinny jeans, but I don’t really get to wear them that often. My office doesn’t really allow jeans very often and I don’t want to wear them every single weekend. I have been working on updating my trouser wardrobe with some fresh shapes and colors (the majority of mine are boot cut trousers). These mint trousers from Banana Republic are perfect for the office and will definitely be in constant rotation in my spring/summer work wardrobe. I have wanted to try a leopard and mint combination for awhile now so I thought why not! To make it office appropriate and a touch or professionalism, I added nude pumps and a navy blazer because I mean everything is better with a blazer right? When playing with colors and patterns like this for an office wardrobe make sure you pay attention to shapes and fabrics. To look office appropriate they must be office appropriate. Especially since they will be drawing a lot of attention!

Inspired My Style

When I am doing outfit posts, I typically try to include the “inspiration piece.” This is the particular article of clothing that inspired that day’s outfit. I usually stand in my closet and find one thing that I really want to wear and then pull pieces from my wardrobe to make that happen. I could be drawn to an item for a number of reasons – color, print, wanting to utilize a piece I haven’t worn in awhile, or a necessity to wear a particular item (such as a suit for an upcoming meeting). One of the things I have come to love about blogging is the inspiration I get by reading other blogs. It has encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and pair things in completely new ways. Now when I pull my “inspiration piece” I feel like I have so many more options from using the same clothing just by pairing things differently.

So, now I want to see what inspires you! I am so excited to announce Inspired My Style. It will launch on April 25! This will be a link up that will allow you to get your creative juices flowing! A lot of linkups are centered around a particular style (such as Girls Night Out!), but this one will be around whatever your feeling at the moment! Just make sure to include in your post what inspired the outfit. Please make sure to give credit where credit is due as well! If you were inspired by another blogger, make sure to reference them in your post! Inspiration can come from anywhere – a particular print, a magazine, the Internet, a garden, your kids, and so.

Mixing Fall Colors into Your Spring Wardrobe

I always associate the color of this blouse with fall. Maybe because it happens to be the same shade as many of the leaves when they turn colors. I really love the way it looks when paired with white trousers and it makes it perfect for spring! Got a big meeting at the office? Put on a navy blazer and you are ready to go!

Peplum & Pink Bows & A Hint of Mint

I have been looking for a white peplum for a while. I stumbled across this beauty at JC Penny and when I realized it was on $10, well it was a no brainer. I painted my nails this beautiful mint shade this past weekend and I am not one to change up my nail color every night (who has time for that - especially with a toddler running around), so this week has been kind of interesting trying to plan my work wardrobe around mint nails. Today I went simple and classic with a black and white color combo with pink and mint accessories.

How to Wear Brights to Work

Wearing bright colors in a corporate environment can be tricky. This time of the year I crave brights so I figure out ways to sneak them in. This color combination hapened by mistake. I was at Target the other day and I saw this shirt and fell in love. It is the perfect spring color and would look perfect with skinny jeans or my J Crew Minnie Pants seen here in cobalt blue. I was headed out and spotted these crop pants and decided on a whim to give them a try. I got home, opened the bag, and there it was  ----  the perfect spring color combination! I love when inspiration hits out of left field :-) To make this look office appropriate, I toned down the brights with my go to navy blazer and nude pumps.

Tuesday How To: Break Up A Suit

A suit is a good investment piece for anyone working in a corporate environment.  Of course you can wear it together for those big meetings, but you don’t always have to wear it as a suit. You can break the components up and incorporate other articles in your wardrobe. This post is about doing just that. Let’s take the white suit from yesterday’s post (see this link for pictures of it worn as an actual suit) and break the components down. These looks will take you anywhere from the office to a night out on the town!

Inspiration: White Suit – Victoria’s Secret
White trouser are a spring/summer staple in my book. These trousers look great when paired with a sheer top and strappy leopard print heels. Perfect for a date out with the hubby or a night on the town your best girlfriends!
The Extras:
The blazer adds instant polish to an otherwise simple spring dress. This is perfect for the office or a date!
The Extras:
  • Dress - Target
  • Belt - Old
  • Pumps - Jessica Simpson
  • Clutch - Old
So what is your favorite look? How do you break up a suit?

Wearing a White Suit

Happy Monday!

I love suits. Maybe it is just the corporate girl in me! Now that it is spring and warm, I wanted to get away from the traditional black suit so I decided to break out my white suit. Generally when I wear a white suit in a corporate environment, I like to stay away from pastels or soft colors and go with vibrant colors that don't fade in the background. Today I decided to pair it with an oxblood silk shirt. I love how the colors compliment each other nicely and the rich color of the blouse is just beautiful! Oxblood was a hot color for fall, but who says you can't incorporate it into your spring wardrobe as well?

Cobalt + Grey

Happy Friday! This week has been crazy busy and has flown by. My 18 month old is cutting 6 – yes that’s right – 6 back teeth at once which means lots of fussiness and not a lot of sleep at our house. But that’s ok, because when that sweet boy smiles at me it is completely worth getting up at 2 & 3 & 4 & well you get the idea! Well, let’s move on the fashion aspect of today’s post. I had such an overwhelming response to the post I did for the 5 Day, 5 Way Challenge hosted by Fran & Whitney that featured these J Crew Cobalt Minnie Pants. For those of you that love the idea of bright pants, but want to keep the rest of the outfit simple here is another way to wear them. Here I have toned down the brightness by keeping my upper half in monochromatic greys. This is a way for you to incorporate bright items in your wardrobe without getting too far out of your comfort zone.  Take one bright item and mix it in with neutrals.

Inspiration Piece: Cobalt Minnie Pants
The Extras:
·         Grey Top – Target
·         Grey Blazer – Kohl’s
·         Flats – JC Penny

What is your favorite way to wear a bright pant?
I love figuring out new ways to wear things I already own. I don’t have a ton of disposable income to put towards my wardrobe, but I do tend to tire of wearing the same thing rather quickly. Remixing what I already have makes things seem new and fresh and doesn’t cost a dime! So – I have decided to challenge myself to remix an article of month (maybe more!) and do a post on the new ways I have come up to wear it and I want you to join in on the fun too! To challenge myself even more I would like for you to help me to decide what article of clothing that will be!

So now for the choices – Leave a comment below telling me which piece you think should be first! Or if you see something in my archives you would like for me to remix I will be happy to do that as well!

Tuesday How To - Wear Bright Lipstick to Work

Good Morning! I am going to start something new this week - How To Tuesdays. I will take a challenge (such as how to wear bright lipstick in a corporate environment and still look professional) and come up with my version of a solution. If anyone has any ideas they would like for me to try out let me know and I will be your test dummy :-)

I never wear red lipstick, but the other day I thought why not give it a shot. So hear is my "How To" wear it to work and still look polished:

· You want the lip to be the focus so:
*Keep all other makeup to a minimal.
     *Keep your hairstyle simple

· If you are going with bright lips, keep your clothing choices simple. You don't want your blouse to be competing for attention. Here I chose a simple navy tunic with just a little detail done in a neutral tan and paired it with white trousers. The lips remain the focus.

· Keep accessories to a minimal. A simple earring and set of gold bangles is all you really need with a bright lip in a professional environment.

· If you want a little something extra with the outfit, I would suggest doing so with your shoes. They are the furthest away from your lips so they will not compete as much. I chose to keep it simple with some bronze shoes that paired back nicely with the detail in the top and earrings.

Inspiration: Red Lips - Mary Kay Lipstick

The Extras:

· Tunic - Old
· White Trousers - Victoria's Secret
· Pumps - Victoria's Secret
· Bangles - Local boutique
· Earrings - old

What are your style rules when it comes to wearing a bright lip?

XOXO  --- Misty

Nautical & A Few of My Favorite Things

Today in addition to an outfit, I am going to share a peak into a few of my favorite things and a glance into my life!
I hope everyone had an amazing Easter! I know I sure did! God sure has blessed me and my little family! I actually wore this outfit to Church yesterday. It wasn’t the outfit I had wanted to wear, but it was raining pretty hard so I decided to do a quick change so I could incorporate boots (which would be a must for the Easter egg hunt later if the rain stopped. I had about 15 minutes to get ready so I thought I would stick with a classic nautical style that I could throw together quick and still look put together. A simple stripped dress looks instantly more polished when combined with a red belt and a navy blazer. What is your go to style when you are short on time, but want to looked polished?

Destination: Church

Inspiration Piece – Anchor Bracelet - local boutique Impluse – See below for close up and details on how you can win one!

The Extras:

·         Blazer – HM

·         Belt – Old

·         Boots – Dillard’s

·         Earrings – Old

This bracelet is just adorable! I found it recently while browsing through Impulse- a local boutique here in town! It is a simple blue & white rope bracelet with an anchor clasp for a clasp and I just adore it! Sometimes the simplest accessories can completely transform an outfit. I loved it so much, I want to give one away to a reader as a way to say thank you for stopping by!

Rules for the giveaway:

·         Must be a follower of Balancing A Hectic World via Google Friends Connect or Bloglovin

·         Leave a comment below telling me what you would wear it with and your email address so I can contact you!

The winner will be chosen randomly and announced next Monday!
Now for a sneak peak at a few of my favorite things!

Pearls – Need I say more?? What girl doesn’t love a set off pearls? These are a three strand set that I wear constantly (browse through my archives for pictures of them worn with various outfits). This picture frame was a gift from my sweet niece after the birth of my son. I absolutely love it!
This is a close up of the necklace hanging on the picture frame. This was also a gift from my niece. Behind the birthstone gem is two little feet. I have picture of Peyton’s feet from an ultrasound done early in our pregnancy and ever since then I have been completely in love with those ten little toes!
Saw these bracelets and watch the other day at a local boutique and instantly fell in love. The band of the watch is mint so it is perfect for this season! Best of all – all of them where under $40!
Words can’t describe how much I love this little rascal. I was trying to cook breakfast Sunday morning before Church but little man just wanted Mommy. So of course I obliged and held him while proceeding to scramble eggs! This is me all natural. I do try to wear something that makes me feel pretty because to be honest it makes me feel better. If I wear something crappy I tend to feel crappy so what better way to put yourself in a good mood than by wearing a bright pink! I haven’t brushed my hair (or teeth for that matter) and have on ZERO makeup so brace yourself before the next photo!
My world in a 34 pound package :)
Love this face! Guah Mom... another picture... LOL.. Love him!!
I hope you all enjoyed this sneak peak into a few of my favorite things and into my home!!
XOXO Misty
